Why does my cat lick me? Vet Vs The Net
Ever wondered why your cat licks you? As it happens, almost 2,000 people ask Google this every month! Jenny the vet has some answers for us…
So, why does my cat lick me?
Cats lick their owners (or other people they like) as a form of affection. Cats keep themselves clean and groomed by licking their own fur, and it’s a form of affection when cats groom one another in this way. This courtesy is extended when cats lick humans – they’re doing it to be nice!
Is it a problem if my cat licks me too much?
This is doubtful, but if you’re concerned in any way, have a chat with your vet.
Cat licking their own fur?
This is normal because cats use their tongues to clean their fur, but if you think your cat is licking their fur too much or more than usual, it could be a sign that they have fleas. Excessive grooming can also be a sign of anxiety in cats. If your cat is licking their own fur a lot, anxiety could have something to do with it. Note, however, that anxious cats are also likely to suffer changes in behaviour and to hide away a lot, so your cat licking YOU is very unlikely to be a sign of anxiety.
